Anthony Goto Staff Engineer • Career Mentor • Parent

I help professionals level up their careers, land better roles, and understand what it actually takes to thrive in big tech.

I'm Anthony Goto.

As a staff engineer at Netflix, formerly Uber, I coach and create content about software engineering, career growth, interviews, tech, and being a parent.

I've spent over a decade mentoring professionals one-on-one, and now I'm bringing that work into the open. I genuinely enjoy this work, sharing lessons I've learned the hard way, and sharpening how I think and communicate.

While there's plenty of free content, I also offer one-on-one services for those who want more direct guidance. I hope something here helps.

I've been fortunate enough to make some significant impacts on the consumer electronics and entertainment industry. The following are some of the big rocks I've moved along my career.

  1. Netflix · Consumer Engineering

    Ecosystem & Operational Insights

Helping hundreds of engineers ship the Netflix app across iOS, Android, TV, Web, and many more platforms. The work is about giving teams the signal and tooling they need to move fast with confidence.

  2. Moved to Boston

  3. Uber · Mobile Platform

Mobile Observability for Riders, Drivers, Eaters & Freight

Built the telemetry stack for Uber's mobile apps. Hired specifically for the empathy needed to design a system that mobile engineers would actually adopt, not just one that worked on paper.

  4. Became a New Parent

  5. Netflix · API Platform

    API Edge-as-a-Service

Built the data endpoints powering iOS and other client platforms, along with the A/B testing and feature-flagging primitives used across the company. Also prototyped Netflix's first central GraphQL graph, laying groundwork for what became the company-wide standard.

  6. Moved to Nashville

  7. Married Mira

  8. Netflix · iOS

    Netflix Originals on iOS

Built the custom in-app experiences for Netflix's first Originals launches: House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, and Hemlock Grove. Required breaking long-held assumptions built into the mature technology stack.

  9. Technical Emmy Award for engineering on-demand video innovations

  10. Palm · webOS

    Messenger, Phone & Video Calling

Owned the full text messaging stack on webOS, from chat bubbles down to the radio signal. Granted a patent for video calling over telephony systems. Long, hard hours on a hardware-driven launch.

  11. 2Wire · Blockbuster

    Blockbuster Streaming Set-Top Box

Built the UI for Blockbuster's late answer to Netflix. One of the first consumer set-top products to use JavaScript and web technologies for accelerated front-end development.

  12. Moved to Silicon Valley

  13. Comcast / Cox · TiVo

    TiVo on Comcast

Built the foundational platform layer that TiVo sat on top of, tuned to hit a good frame rate across a fleet of aging legacy set-top boxes.

  14. Comcast

    Comcast Guide Data Pipeline

Designed and built the wire-protocol database that fed TV program data to nearly every Comcast box in the 2000s. Brutal hardware constraints turned it into a puzzle that needed some genuinely clever solutions.

  15. Graduated from Western University
